APPLE AND PUMPKIN DAY
By Mary Dutton
What a lovely day we had today at the event, lots of apples, pumpkins, people, laughter, food and friendly folk. Yes it was a souper ( thats, apple and pumpkin soup ) day. Once again I came home with a fist full of recipes and promises to myself that I will definitely make them this year.
The apple press was worked really hard again this year with the usual appreciation. Thank you to all the wonderful workers and volunteers for the delicious food all made with apples and pumpkins surprisingly.
Lots of laughter could be heard from the apple bobbing corner, give Tracy her due, she persevered until she got one as did Phil's mum, sorry didn't get your name, all I am saying is you could tell who had their own teeth!!! I managed to get one myself, as I said at the time, I know what they felt like on the Titanic, got the apple along with water in my ears. Must admit the hot cider soon gave you that all over glow feeling.
On a serious note, the longest peel competition was well represented, I do honestly feel there were some professional apple peelers there making my 76cm look pretty poor, we were hoping that Liz, the reigning champion would put in a good effort and I did have a couple of bob on her to win, but the peel just wasn't on her side. So congratulations to the winners and runners up. Sorry I forgot to write your names down but we will recognise you next year, us losers are now in training for then.
The weather was overcast but still warm and there was a small shower but plenty of gazebos, so no-one got wet, well not with the rain anyway. So thank you all again for yet another great day in the Vale.
